Land Code

Currently the Nanoose First Nation is in the process of creating a Land Code to undertake jurisdiction over its Land base...

Along with 25 other First Nations in Canada, the Nanoose First Nations were able to successfully sign its Adhesion paper to become the last of the First Nation tribes allowed to join in the process of creating its own Land Code.

There are 21 operational First Nations in North America exercising their jurisdictional rights over their own land. Also there are 25 developmental First Nations in the process of developing their own Land Code.

In April 2008, after meeting in Richmond with other Lands Advisory Board member nations, and INAC the Snaw'Naw'As Nation was able to secure funding to begin the developmental stage process. Shortly after, the beginnings of a committee were starting to take shape after heads of families appointed 2 members of their branch to sit on this committee.

Since then, now April 2009, there have been a handful of community meetings, elders consultations, meetings with other Land Code Operational First Nations, meetings with INAC, training provided by L.A.B. and many other successful gatherings from our committee and its facilitators.

The committee itself meets every first and third Wednesday of every month to create the actual document to present to the community, elders are invited to consult with the committee from time to time; and much dedication is seen and heard from everyone involved.
