ELECTORAL TIMING
Snaw’naw’as First Nation elections shall be staggered for the purpose of promoting governance continuity and the maintenance of government experience.
- In the Inaugural Election conducted under the authority of this Code, and for any Full General Election invoked by either the Snaw’naw’as First Nation Council or a Referendum in accordance with Part 7 of this Code, there shall be elected:
- one (1) Chief to a four (4) year term;
- two (2) Councilors (with the highest vote-count) to a four (4) year term; and,
- two (2) Councilors (with the next highest vote-count) to a two (2) year term.
- Subsequent to an Inaugural or a Full General Election, the Snaw’naw’as First Nation shall have Regular Elections every two (2) years in anticipation of the expiry of the terms of office of a portion of the Snaw’naw’as First Nation Council.
- In Regular Elections, the term of office for Councilors shall be four (4) years.
- The following example may be used to illustrate the timing of future elections:
Election 2008 (Inaugural Election)
- One Chief — to a four-year term (term expires in 2012)
- Two Councilors — to a four-year term (term expires in 2012)
- Two Councilors — to a two-year term (term expires in 2010)
Election 2010 (Regular Election)
- Two Councilors — to a four-year term (term expires in 2014)
Election 2012 (Regular Election)
- One Chief — to a four-year term (term expires in 2016)
- Two Councilors — to a four-year term (term expires in 2016)
And so on
If, by example, and for greater certainty, in the year 2009, Council or the Membership invoke a Full General Election through a Part 7 process, all Offices of Chief and Councilors would be vacated and a Full General Election would be held.
Election 2009 (Full General Election)
- One Chief — to a four-year term (term expires in 2013)
- Two Councilors — to a four-year term (term expires in 2013)
- Two Councilors — to a two-year term (term expires in 2011)
Election 2011 (Regular Election)
- Two Councilors — to a four-year term (term expires in 2015)
And so on
