Tribal Journeys 2008

Official Theme of Tribal Journeys 2008:

“Paddle to Quwutsun”

This year the Tribal Journeys pulled into the bay of Nanoose around 23+ Snuxwulh landed along our shoreline being greeted by hundreds. Local singers greeted the canoes with a travel song, along with local elders welcoming them into the traditional territories of the Nanoose people.

The Spirit Pole arrived early in the morning for setup around 8:00am, once they were designated a spot they were setup and ready for the opening at 11:30am. Local elders and singers stood together singing a prayer song while walking towards the Spirit Pole, with opening speeches from local elders and people of the Snaw Naw As village the Spirit Poles journey into Nanoose was successful and everyone was able to carve a piece of history!

We raised our grandmother once most of the snuxwulh gathered with honored speaker Willie Seymour who spoke about the importance of our grandmother and her job in our community. A group of men from near and far walked with her as we carried her from her birthplace to her final home guarding the bay. She is protector of all who travel through our lands, and is proof that our culture is not gone and we are ready to reclaim our traditions.
